Zhi Chen
Composer | Sound-Designer | Audio Director
Hi! I’m Zhi, like the letter, and I’m a New York City–based composer, sound designer, and audio director. From the concert hall and jazz bandstands to film scoring stages, I bring a fun blend of Eastern influences, jazz, and Western classical tradition to every project. I have over 20+ award winning short films and videogames, most recently having scored Luigi Lookalike (2025), winner of the Russo Brothers Italian American Filmmaker Forum grant, and also served as the audio director of Deeprooted, an indie game developed by Isolato Studios.
I am also co-founder of Waves & Staves, a team of composers offering film and game audio services spanning transcription, orchestration, arranging, score prep, sound design, foley, dialogue editing, and Dolby Atmos mixing and mastering. Through this studio, I also conduct and lead my own 50 piece ensemble, called the Chicken Combo Jazz Orchestra, performing in various venues and providing remote recording sessions for clients.
My current works include The Great Race, a musical based on the 12 Chinese Zodiacs, and a piano concerto exploring the New Seven Wonders of the World. When I'm not being workaholic in the studio, you can probably find me surfing at Rockaway Beach with my little brother.
